A Holy Place
Paradoxically, if we want everywhere to be holy, we have to set apart one place that is holy!
The concept of “holy space” is under attack in our modern society, which values egalitarianism above hierarchy. But without one place being set aside as “holy,” we lose the ability to see the “holy” in every place!
Of course, remembering that “holy” has a specific meaning is challenging. But in our society, still working to shake off the hangover of our secular worldview, we think that “holy” means “superstitious” or “magical.”
Too many people still make sport of the very idea of “holy,” so dismissing even the idea of a holy place has debilitating consequences for our society. I venture to say that a healthy respect for “holy” things is fundamental to rebuilding a beautiful and peaceful society.
Holy space creates the atmosphere and conditions necessary for my life to refocus, reorient, and restore true meaning and purpose.
