Ask Anything
The true mark of a mature person is the ability to so tame and discipline your desires that you come to only desire what is best. That's something worth learning!
“All you gotta do is rub that lamp!” “Mr. Aladdin, sir, what will your pleasure be? Let me take your order and jot it down. You ain’t never had a friend like me!” So sue me, I’m in an “Aladdin” kind of mood today!
But seriously, isn’t it a wonderful fantasy to have your own personal “genie” to grant you wishes? To be able to “ask anything!” And yet, the old story of Aladdin and other stories where wishes were granted always came with a warning, and invariably, the person who had the genie or was granted the wishes always went too far and always ended up the loser. The moral of the story is that granting wishes usually reveals the true character flaw inside the person!
So, how can we avoid this character flaw by seeking what’s best instead of what’s comfortable or selfish? How do we stop the immature expectation of “magic” and grow up to truly ask for the right things?
And how do we make sense of our Gospel Lesson today? Our Lord Jesus said to His disciples, “Ask anything…” Really? Anything?
